Tasting Notes

Vinous 89

The 1989 Cos d Estournel has a deep garnet core with some bricking on the rim. On the nose, it shows exactly the same as before, offering a gorgeous melange of mulberry, rust, fennel and light garrigue notes, very well defined and even a little rustic in style. The aromatics have aged better than the medium-bodied palate, which presents a fine bead of acidity but exhibits drying tannins and some hardness on the tobacco and hickory finish. Personally, I would broach bottles sooner rather than later, though large formats should still drink well. Tasted from an ex-cellar bottle at the chateau. [Neal Martin, 10/09/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

Looks considerably more mature at the rim than the 1989. Lighter nose than the 1988 but with lots of rich ripeness. Big and bold and recalls the wines being made today. Lots of ripeness plus St-Estephe character. Vibrant finish. Not that subtle but lots of impact. Very slightly tarry finish. [30/06/2011]

Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020

Robert Parker 95

Tasted at Robersons’ 1989 Bordeaux horizontal. The Cos d’Estournel 1989 has a dense, broody bouquet with typical Saint Estephe earthiness complemented by hints of seaweed and a touch of ox blood. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but rounded tannins, very good weight and concentration here, fine acidity and harmony with a nice build so that its finishes with a peacocks tails of mulberry, cedar and leather. This is maturing beautifully, lovely talcum finish. Drink now-2025. Tasted June 2010. [Neal Martin, 01/06/2010]

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025
