The 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques from Jean-Marie Fourrier is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, crushed cassis, dried flowers and sweet underbrush. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and bright, with a deep, layered mid-palate, framed by velvety tannins and succulent acids and a compelling sense of purity and equilibrium. The finish is tangy and subtly chalky. This is a superb Clos Saint-Jacques that’s drinking beautifully now. [William Kelley, 01/04/2018]

Saturated medium red. Wild, musky aromas of redcurrant, coffee and smoke. Large-scaled and sweet for a wine from this vineyard, but also complex and suave, if rather closed at present. Shows an intriguing mineral quality as well as lower-pitched earth tones. Distinctly gamey today: be sure to decant this if you want to try a bottle anytime soon. Finishes with sizable dusty tannins.
