Tasting Notes

The 2005 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Armand Rousseau flirts with perfection. There is stunning delineation on the nose. The precision and definition of the aromatics are like nothing else, revealing shimmering red berry fruit intermixed with rose petal and a hint of Morello cherry. The palate is a lattice of lace-like tannins, vibrating with energy and tension, but it's gentle in terms of grip and has a real weightlessness on the finish. There is incredible fruit concentration here-a heavenly Chambertin that could almost bring a grown man to tears. Tasted at the 05/15 Burgundy dinner in The Good Earth.

Mid crimson. Lustrous look. Very firm and manly – the butch side of Pinot?! Firm and striated with iron. Straight-backed stuff, no sweet soppiness here. Very rich and spicy and alluring. Juicy and sumptuous and, ok, there’s still a hint of oak but this is such wonderful stuff it’s a real treat to be tasting it. So neat and long and although it is not luscious, it is not painfully dry. So rich yet structured. True spice, not tarty stuff. Only 500 cases made.

Medium+ ruby-garnet colour. Aromas of loam, moss, truffles and tar contribute earthy complexity to the ripe raspberry, dark chocolate and hung meat core. The palate is very refined, rich yet wonderfully balanced by medium+ acidity. The medium+ level of tannins are finely grained giving this wine achingly good mouth feel. Very, very long finish. Drink 2011 – 2025. Tasted November 2008.
Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025
