Healthy dark red. Lovely violet lift to the dark aromas of blackberry, licorice and pepper. Concentrated, sappy and saline, with vibrant black fruit and spice flavors complicated by sexy saline soil tones and a note of espresso. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and excellent rising length. This, too, is very backward today, even a bit youthfully musclebound.

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru les Corbeaux has a more a oeairya and perhaps more floral, feminine bouquet compared with the nascent Les Evocelles ’13. The fruit here leans a little more to the red side of the spectrum rather than black. The palate is structured and more masculine than the Les Evocelles. Beneath the mineral-rich black fruit lurks quite rigid, almost obdurate tannins, although there is superb tension in situ and the grip is almost gentle on the finish. This is the kind of Gevrey then sends tiny ripples of excitement down your back.
