Tasting Notes
Robert Parker 93
The 2014 Vieux Chateau Mazerat has evolved a really quite intriguing bouquet, quite potent and very perfumed, iris and crushed violets, red berry fruit and a touch of wild mint. There is a soupçon of something Burgundian here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, quite sophisticated spicy red fruit with a silky finish that conveys great tension. This has turned into really quite an outstanding wine from Jonathan Maltus.
Anticipated maturity: 2019-2032
Vinous 91-94
The 2014 Vieux Château Mazerat is the most obvious and powerful wine in Jonathan Maltus’s range. A huge, dark wine, the 2014 displays notable breadth and resonance throughout. Black cherries, smoke and new leather emerge, but only with great reluctance. In fact, the 2014 shuts down rather quickly in the glass, which is probably a good sign for the future. The blend is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc.
