Tasting Notes

Harvest commenced 24 August. 50% whole bunch, 50% new oak, two punchdowns.Showing the typical colour of the 2020 vintage – almost opaque and Malbec-like. Blackberry and dark cherry on the nose, perfumed with a herbal edge – a hint of menthol. Clos de Tart 2020 has supreme elegance on the palate with more finesse than the weighty 2019. Winemaker Alessandro Noli said the challenge in 2020 was keeping the freshness – he has succeeded admirably. Lovely now, this will continue to blossom.

The 2020 Clos du Tart Grand Cru delivers a lot of new oak on the nose, occluding the fruit profile and terroir. At least initially, this feels high-toned and glossy before mustering more terroir expression and mineralite with rigorous aeration. The palate is well-balanced with fine but quite sturdy tannins. Touches of licorice tincture the fruit, which is slightly baked on the finish, causing me to dock a couple of points. This is an impressive Grand Cru with swagger, though pipped to the post by a couple of others in this flight. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
